The Lorax teaches us how to calm our mind while we learn to read, spell and sign with ASL. Combining mindfulness and reading lessons, kids become settled inside to help themselves and the world outside.
Loosen up with the Lorax. Oh, hello there. It's me, the Lorax. I am so glad you're here. Before you can take care of others, and especially our planet, you have to first take care of you. When you feel clear and ready in here, you can help the world out there. Like I say, unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. And that's a great word to help us. Unless. So let's understand the word unless by spelling it out, and signing each letter with our hand using American Sign Language. You can also learn simple ways to help ourselves settle our mind and our body, too. Ready? Let's begin. U for Unwind. U. U. Start by sitting comfortably and unwind your body. Maybe you raise your shoulders up and back. Feel your muscles loosening. There, that's it. N for Notice. N. N. Now that your body is starting to settle, notice if you have any distracting thoughts in your mind or if anything feels tight in your body that's causing unease or feeling stuck. If you do, that's OK. We all do. L for Letting go. L. L. Start letting go of those uneasy feelings in your mind and your body, letting them float up, up and away above the clouds. E for Ease. E. E. Take another slow breath in, and then a nice slow breath out, to slowly ease both your mind and your body. That's it. Feel your mind and body ease. Our first S for Settle. S. S. With those uneasy thoughts and sensations now way in the distance, a mind and body can start to settle. And our second and last S for Stay centered S. S. Settling helps us to stay centered in this moment for as long as we need to, with a clear mind and positive attitude. Oh, that was incredible. And so were you. You learned how to spell, read, and sign the letters in unless. Imagine what each letter stands for and using that to help yourself settle and be present. The very first step before we can help the world around us. Yeah, I'll say it again. Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. So thank you for spending time reading with me. And thank you for spending time helping others. [MUSIC PLAYING]
